The Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) has announced that it has officially authorized three Sudanese clubs — Al-Merrikh, Al Hilal SC Omdurman, and Al Ahli SC Wad Madani — to compete in the Rwanda Premier League.
The announcement was made on Friday, October 24, 2025.
These clubs requested to participate in Rwanda’s top-flight league after football activities in Sudan were suspended in April 2023 due to the ongoing conflict in the country.
The teams are currently seeking CAF approval before they can officially begin competing in the Rwandan league.
Last season, Al Hilal and Al-Merrikh played in the Mauritania Premier League, where Al Hilal emerged champions and received a symbolic trophy for finishing top of the table.
However, both clubs later returned to Sudan to take part in a national mini-tournament involving the country’s top eight teams — an event that decided which clubs would represent Sudan in the 2025/26 CAF competitions.
If all goes as planned, the Sudanese teams are expected to start playing in the Rwanda Premier League on Matchday Six.
Sources reveal that the clubs have already paid the necessary participation fees, while each Rwandan league club will receive 4.5 million Rwandan francs in financial support from FERWAFA.
