KIGALI CITY DOMINATES THE UMURENGE KAGAME CUP 2025

Musanze, Rwanda — August 15, 2025

The 2025 edition of the Umurenge Kagame Cup came to a thrilling close in Musanze District, with the City of Kigali emerging as the overall champion, sweeping trophies and medals across multiple disciplines.

The grand finale, held under the theme “Promoting Good Governance with Citizens at the Center”

Culminated in a tense football match between Jabana Sector (representing Kigali) and Mbazi Sector (from the Southern Province). Kick-off was at 2:30PM.

Jabana came out strong, netting a goal in the first half and adding a second in the latter stages of the game. Despite strong pressure from Mbazi, the Kigali-based team held on, sealing a 2-0 victory and clinching the coveted national title.

Women’s Football, Volleyball, and Basketball

In women’s football, Mahembe Sector from Nyamasheke (Western Province) edged past Kacyiru Sector from Kigali 1-0, thanks to a decisive goal by Saidat.

Volleyball glory went to Niboye Sector (Kicukiro, Kigali), who overpowered Ngoma Sector from the Eastern Province with a 3-1 set victory.

Basketball saw Musanze dominate both men’s and women’s finals, defeating Rutsiro 78-71 in the men’s game and overcoming Kamonyi in the women’s bracket.

Track and Field: Kigali Runners Shine

Kigali athletes left their mark in athletics, winning most of the podium spots:

  • 1000m: Gérard Musabyeyezu (Men, Kigali) and Donatha Byukusenge (Women, Kigali)
  • 3000m: Emmanuel Niyibizi (Musanze) and Devotha Byukusenge (Kigali)
  • 10,000m: Zakiy Niyonshima (Women, Kigali)
  • 15,000m: Ibrahim Ntivugiruzwa (Men, Kigali)

In high jump, Djibril Masengesho (Nyamasheke) and Solange Uwamariya (Kigali) took gold.

Third-Place Playoffs

Held on August 24, Kayonza District made a strong showing, taking third place in women’s volleyball and both men’s and women’s basketball. In football, Kimonyi Sector (Musanze) defeated Bwishyura (Karongi) 1-0 to secure third place.

Speaking at the event, Minister of Local Government, Hon. Dr. Patrice Mugenzi, praised the tournament’s growing participation:

This year, all 416 sectors took part in the Kagame Cup. It’s a great show of support for His Excellency President Paul Kagame’s vision of inclusive governance and citizen-centered development.”

The 2026 edition of the Kagame Cup will be hosted by the Eastern Province.
